Reporter – KCUR’s Kansas News Service

KCUR 89.3
Topeka , KS

Application Deadline: Tuesday, May 01, 2018

Description

KCUR’s Kansas News Service is looking for an ambitious multimedia reporter who will thrive exploring the dynamics of rural communities across the state. This reporter, through a one-year fellowship, will focus on health issues and the 2018 elections but also have the opportunity to take on in-depth projects.  The job is based in Topeka and involves occasional travel around Kansas.

Kansas News Service is a regional journalism collaborative that focuses on education, health and politics. The work of its reporters appears on public radio stations across the state (and sometimes beyond), online and in newspapers in Kansas.

News in Kansas can run the gamut. There’s conflict between rural and urban interests, over abortion, on issues of guns, voting rights, and the role of government health programs.  Kansas is often a testing ground on national issues of tax policy and regulation. Reporters have no trouble finding hot-button issues to cover.

This fellow will pitch and report spot news and long-form features in both audio and digital form. The reporter will spend roughly half of their time delivering fully realized stories of their own. They will come up with many of their own story ideas and then report, write and voice them for use on radio and in digital form. The rest of their time will be devoted to shooting and adding still photographs to the news service library, helping produce short videos, creating graphics to augment stories for colleagues, and assisting podcast production.

Kansas News Service works under the direction of KCUR 89.3, the NPR affiliate in Kansas City. KCUR is an editorially independent community service of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  See www.kcur.org/jobs for information about KCUR and Kansas City.

Review of applications will begin on May 1, 2018.  This position will remain open until filled.
