Politics Reporter

St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU
St. Louis , MO

Application Deadline: Friday, Dec 21, 2018

Description

Introduction and Description:

The St. Louis region is a dream come true for the inveterate political reporter. There are more than enough governments to cover (over 90!) not to mention our statewide and federal representatives. The stories are vast and varied and St. Louis Public Radio is looking for a reporter to explore and explain it all.

We are looking for a reporter to join our politics team who believes in the watchdog role of the media and who can translate complicated policy, regulation and legislation into compelling copy that explains their impacts on our audience. An ideal candidate will be able to provide thorough, thoughtful reporting while also focusing on analysis, enterprise, exposition – less what happened and more why it happened, what it means and what’s going to happen. The politics reporter is excellent at connecting with sources and is able to see the big story lurking in the small details. Above all, we are looking for a reporter who is endlessly curious and thrives in exploring how politics impacts the lives of everyone in the state.

The right person for this job will be able to file well-written, engaging stories for the web AND sound-rich, personality-driven stories for radio.

Other qualifications include:

  • Five years experience in a newsroom;
  • A sophisticated level of awareness and understanding of the issues facing state and regional policy makers today;
  • An understanding of city, county, state and federal political systems;
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, political science, history or the relevant equivalent experience.

Radio reporting experience is preferred, but not required. A passion for audio storytelling and the mission of public radio is a must. The politics reporter can also expect to participate in our political podcast, Politically Speaking.
