Summary

Capital Public Radio’s newsroom continues to expand, and as part of that growth we are now hiring for a new, full-time position: a News Editor to join our award-winning team.

The News Editor will play a significant role in shaping daily news coverage, in addition to developing feature stories and helping with special projects.

We’re looking for an experienced journalist who can:

• assign, oversee and edit daily news coverage and feature stories for broadcast, digital and other platforms
• help with special projects
• develop and coach reporters so that they serve our audience at a high-level
• put on their “reporter hat” and deliver daily news stories, features and other content
• anchor newscasts
• appear on “talk” programs such as Insight With Beth Ruyak

The News Editor should have several years of editorial experience — but not necessarily as an editor. If you are an experienced reporter with exceptional news judgment and a positive, inclusive attitude, this may be an opportunity for a new role.

Instincts for what distinguish a “public radio story” are essential. A passion for NPR and public-service journalism is a must.

The ideal candidate will have a background working in radio and with audio-editing software. But this is not a requirement: We welcome non-audio journalists.

Duties And Responsibilities

• assigns and edits daily radio news stories
• occasionally plans, develops and edits feature-length radio stories
• plans, develops and edits content for digital and other platforms
• works closely with the Managing Editor on big-picture projects
• helps oversee CapRadio’s partnership with dozens of California public radio stations
• delivers daily stories, features, two-way interviews, digital articles
• collaborates and communicates with NPR and other national outlets as needed
• participates in on-air fundraising and other CapRadio fundraising activities
• other newsroom duties as assigned

Skills And Experience

• college degree, preferably in journalism, or equivalent experience
• several years of newsroom experience (radio/audio experience a plus)
• a passion for public radio news and programming
• high-level news judgment

Salary And Benefits

The salary range for this position is $70,000  to $75,000. We offer:
