Assistant Director, Programming Engagement
Team: General Audience Programming

Status: Full-Time/Regular/Exempt

The Assistant Director, Programming Engagement collaborates on and implements station engagement plans for key National Program Service (NPS) programs to optimize local-national connections with PBS member stations. The incumbent also assists in the production of the PBS Annual Meeting programming sessions and other member station meetings.
This position works with station programmers and engagement professionals; works with stations to execute major events and outreach projects including the grant process; tracks budgets; and work closely with the content team and other internal teams to effectively provide stations with accurate and timely information about upcoming programming.
Essential duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • In collaboration with the Senior Director of Programming Operations & Engagement and Director of Programming Engagement, implement creative, cost-effective, and impactful station engagement strategy, budget, and timelines for designated series.
  • Organize and manage project timelines to ensure successful launch.
  • Coordinate with PBS departments, program producers, and external partners to strategize on the best uses of project assets and proactively prepare for station questions or issues; incorporate strategies and observations to work to improve the relationship between PBS Headquarters and local stations.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with station programmers and engagement colleagues in all markets.
  • Write communications, print pieces, conference presentations, and other correspondence to encourage specific targeted messaging and support.
  • Assist in the production of the PBS Annual Meeting programming sessions and manage post-meeting assets. Duties may include (but are not necessarily limited to): the sending of invitations; ensuring successful tape and script delivery; screening content; overseeing the work of outside vendors creating meeting materials; reviewing master playback tapes; and maintaining program inventory, rights, and distribution.
  • Disseminate program materials to appropriate departmental staff for review/approval.
  • Support station activities by managing special events including meal events, receptions, screenings, and press tour duties.
  • Assist other departments with station-related activities as needed.
Requirements for success:
  • 3 years station relations, station engagement, or equivalent experience in a public broadcasting environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of public television programming, event planning, and basic television production delivery materials
  • Familiarity with public television programming and promotions on a local, national, and independent level
  • Understanding of station relations, engagement, and outreach on local and national level
  • General knowledge of broadcast technology and operations
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, including the ability to work on multiple projects in varying stages of development and completion
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with diplomacy a must
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work under stressful circumstances and react to change productively
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Ability to work as a team player in a team environment
  • Developing analytical skills with respect to program material
